
The word “trifle” comes from the old French term “trufle,” and literally means something whimsical. An English trifle is made with real egg custard poured over sponge cake soaked in fruit and sherry and topped with whipped cream. Th trifle dessert was also a way of using up leftover or stale cake.
I have whipped up version of a trifle that does not have any fruit or jelly, and which simply very easy to make.
Ingredients: Serves 4 – 5
- A loaf of Trifle Sponge cake;
- Good quality coffee;
- 500 ml of custard;
- A packet of original Oreo cookies (or any other cookies of choice);
- Chocolate flavoured fresh cream;
- Mint chocolate sticks; and
- fresh mint to garnish.
Method:
- Add 2 -3 teaspoons of coffee to boiling water and allow to cool down, the stronger the coffee the better
- Cut the sponge cake into pieces and layer into a dessert bowl or glass;
- pour the coffee over the sponge cake, make sure that the cake absorbs as much coffee as possible;
- add a layer of custard over the cake;
- Crush about 3/4 packet of Oreo cookies and layer it on the custard;
- Add a layer of sponge cake, no need to soak this layer of cake in coffee;
- Create a much layers as you desire and finish off with custard; and
- Refrigerate the dessert bowls overnight to set.
Prior to serving:
- Once the desserts have been set and are chilled;
- removed from the refrigerator; and
- Add some chocolate whipped cream and cover the entire top layer of the dessert. bowl;
Garnish:
- Crushed and whole Oreo cookies;
- Mint leaves; and
- A stick of mint chocolate.
Serve immediately and simply enjoy the decadence.
